Performing Arts

Westbourne is renowned for its vibrant performing arts program. Students begin learning to play an instrument in Year 3. They receive tuition in violin, cello and recorder and in Year 5 the choice expands to include a wind or brass instrument. Years 4, 5 and 6 students may join the 120-member Junior School Choir, Junior Strings or Junior Band.

Learning music at an early age means many students continue with music in Senior School. Music groups include ensembles, choirs, junior and senior bands, stage bands, orchestras and chamber ensembles.

Students also participate in a very high standard of public performance. The Music Department presents a major concert each term. Students also compete in the ‘Performer of the Year’ competition and have the opportunity to perform with the orchestra at the annual concert. They gain experience by playing at extra-curricular social venues or special community events. This exposure introduces students to the professional world of music and performance.

Students are first introduced to the drama program in Junior School. They experience a sequential and developmental range of activities through to the end of Year 8. In Years 9 and 10 drama units may be taken as electives, in preparation for further studies at VCE level. Junior and Senior students participate in an annual play and drama productions.

Our annual musical is one of the highlights of the School year. It is a wonderful opportunity for students’ skills to be showcased.

Along with actors, singers and orchestra members, many other students are involved in production and stage management, painting scenery, helping with staging or being part of the audio or lighting crew.
