After winning the ACS Senior Football Grand Final against Loyola College, Westbourne’s 1st XVIII Football boys qualified for the Semi Finals of the Division 2 Herald Sun Shield.
In the Semi Final of this competition Westbourne comfortably accounted for a combined Christian School’s Network team and qualified for the Grand Final against Salesian College.
The Grand Final played at Trevor Barker Oval in Sandringham was both a first for the school and the first for any school representing the ACS.
The game proved to be a close and hard-fought affair with scores close throughout much of the day, however when Salesian goaled midway through the final term the margin had increased to 17 points. The frantic seven or eight minutes that followed saw Westbourne kicked four unanswered goals including a soccer off the ground by Ethan Mullenger and a 70 plus meter bomb from inside the centre square by Stefan Costa. The final margin was a thrilling two point win to Westbourne. Wil Tattersall (11m) was judged best on ground following a dominant display in the ruck.
The win capped off a remarkable season for the 1st XVIII which also included a first win in 4 years in the Geoff Ryan Cup and undefeated season in the ACS. Congratulations to all the boys involved.
