Middle Years Learning Centre officially opened
The first stage of our 15-year Masterplan has officially opened, marking a significant milestone in the evolution of our Truganina campus.
Inaugural Middle School Captains for 2026, Lily and Connor, joined Principal and Managing Director Dr Adrian Camm and Board Chair Ilija Grgic to cut the ceremonial ribbon, symbolising the beginning of an exciting new chapter for Middle School learning.
Lily and Connor spoke with pride about their hopes to set the tone for future Middle School Captains during a defining year for the school – reflecting the sense of belonging and opportunity that continues to shape life at Westbourne. Guests later joined student-led tours of the new building and enjoyed refreshments as they explored the spaces.
A milestone in our Masterplan
The Middle Years Learning Centre represents Stage 1 of our 15-year Masterplan, a vision that reimagines the future of learning at Westbourne. Stage 2, now in design, will see the creation of a Music and Performing Arts Centre, significant refurbishments to the Geoffrey Ryan Centre and Auditorium, and new landscaping designed to enhance connectedness and wayfinding across our Truganina campus.
“The intent is clear,” said Adrian. “To enhance connectedness and wayfinding through new boulevards and plazas, improving the coherence of our large site while matching our facilities to our growing reputation as one of Australia’s leading independent schools.”
A space purpose-built for adolescent learning
Designed by Baldasso Cortese and built by Ireland Brown Constructions, the Middle Years Learning Centre draws inspiration from the western plains landscape. Its sculptural tower references the silhouettes of the You Yangs and the region’s historic landmarks, while its soft, grounded form sits comfortably in the horizon.
Inside, every space reflects our human-centred design philosophy – creating environments that promote comfort, wellbeing and connection. With 32 learning areas, innovation labs home to our award-winning GearED program, a 5.7-metre LED theatre screen, a student-run café, and an integrated Health and Wellbeing Centre, the building invites creativity, collaboration and independence.
“Together, these spaces form a coherent ecosystem – a place where our Middle School students will feel known and inspired,” Dr Camm said. “It’s a place that supports both the individual and the collective; a place that belongs to all of us, the Westbourne community.”
