National Recognition for Two Westbourne Educators
Two outstanding members of the Westbourne Grammar School community, Sarah Loorham, Deputy Head of Year 7, and Alba Garcia, Deputy Director of Operations, have been recognised in the 2026 Educator Rising Star Awards, which celebrate emerging leaders making a significant contribution to Australia’s K–12 education sector.
A passionate educator in mathematics and technology, Sarah is recognised for her commitment to student growth, wellbeing and progressive leadership. Since joining Westbourne in 2022, she has broadened her contribution through her work as a Head of House, supporting students through the complexities of adolescence while fostering strong pastoral care practices. Her work in trauma-informed education, alongside her involvement in a research partnership with the The University of Queensland, reflects her focus on creating connected, supportive and inclusive school environments.
Alba is recognised for her thoughtful and compassionate approach to student wellbeing, particularly in supporting young people with complex needs. Working closely with families, staff and external organisations, she helps ensure students are surrounded by the care and guidance needed to flourish. Her practice draws on experiential learning principles and the work of Catherine J. Denial, whose book A Pedagogy of Kindness explores empathy, connection and purposeful engagement in education. Through her calm and student-centred approach, Alba creates environments where students feel safe, respected and empowered to succeed.
Congratulations to Sarah and Alba on this well-deserved recognition.
